All horses love treats and your horse will love your homemade horse treats. Making horse cookies and other goodies is easy and can be done using ingredients that you most likely already have.

In addition to giving the traditional apple or carrot treat, here is a small recipe collection for some homemade horse treats provided to us by various folks and gathered from around the web. Our horse seems to enjoy them all.

Sweet Feed Horse Cookies

Ingredients

  • powdered sugar
  • 4 cups sweet feed
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 cups molasses
  • 2 grated carrots
  • 2 grated apples
  • 1/2 cup flour

Directions

  1. preheat oven to 400 degrees
  2. mix together all ingredients, except powdered sugar
  3. form into large balls and press flat onto greased cookie sheet
  4. bake for 20 minutes
  5. cool, then sprinkle with powdered sugar

Horse Carrot/Apple Cakes

Ingredients

  • 1 carrot
  • 1 apple
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups oats
  • 2 Tablespoons oil

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees
  2. Grate the carrot and apple
  3. Mix together all ingredients
  4. Place mixture in baking tray
  5. Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown
  6. Cool for four hours in refrigerator

Horse Carrot Crispies

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup oatmeal
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup bran
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 apple
  • 2 carrots

Directions

  1. preheat oven to 400 degrees
  2. grease muffin tin
  3. shred apple and carrots
  4. mix apple and carrots with molasses
  5. add brown sugar, water, flour and oatmeal
  6. scoop dough into muffin tin and sprinkle each muffin with brown sugar
  7. bake for 30 to 45 minutes

Oat Carrot Horse Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup uncooked oats
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup molasses

Directions

  • Mix ingredients in bowl
  • Make small balls and place on greased cookie sheet
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown

Apple and Oat Chewies

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1 cup oat bran cereal or ground oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Oil a 9" x 9" square baking pan
  3. Spread the batter evenly in the cake pan and bake for 20 to 30 minutes until firm to the touch
  4. Keep unused treats in the refrigerator

Horse Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 carrots or an apple
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
  2. Roughly chop carrots or apple and mix with dry ingredients
  3. Stir in all wet ingredients and the fill a baking sheet
  4. Score into sections and spray with a small amount of oil
  5. Bake for 15 minutes

Horse Muffins

Ingredients

  • 3 cups oats
  • 2 Tablespoons of honey/molasses
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 shredded apple
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar/sugar
  • 2 drops of food coloring
  • small handful crushed peppermints
  • small box raisins

Directions

  1. Mix oats, water, and honey.
  2. Microwave for 2 minutes.
  3. Add shredded apple, brown sugar, crushed peppermints, food coloring, flour, and raisins.
  4. Place back in microwave for 2 more minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  6. Put mixture into muffin tin. Put in oven for about 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Note: the muffins do not rise.

Bridle Delight

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped carrots
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped apples
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons canola oil
  • 4 peppermint candies
  • 1/3 cup molasses

Directions

  1. Mix together all ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Roll into one inch balls and flatten.
  3. Put in oven at 325 for 20 minutes.

Sweet Horse Treat

Ingredients

  • One cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup water
  • A pinch of honey
  • A pinch of smooth peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup of your horse's favorite grain
  • 1 small carrot

Directions

  1. Put the rolled oats in the bowl and add the water.
  2. Add a pinch of honey and smooth peanut butter.
  3. Add your horse's favorite grain and stir. If it is not sticking add more honey.
  4. Cut up 1 small baby carrot. Roll the carrot pieces in the mixture to make little balls (not too small though).
  5. Put the carrot balls in the refrigerator to harden then serve.

Apple-Carrot Horse Biscuit

Ingredients

  • Honey
  • 1/2 apple
  • Grated carrots and carrot chunks
  • Milk
  • Whole-wheat flour
  • Oatmeal

Directions

  1. Mix grated carrots and carrot chunks, grated apple, oatmeal, whole-wheat flour and honey in a bowl.
  2. Stir until sticky and doughy.
  3. Add a little milk to the mixture milk to make it moist, but still doughy.
  4. Shape the dough into balls and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Let cool.

Apple Horse Treat

Ingredients

  • 2 sliced apples
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 tablespoons margarine

Directions

  1. Melt the 2 tablespoons of margarine at a medium temperature in a sauce pan.
  2. Add brown sugar and stir until it starts to boil then bring to a simmer.
  3. Dip apple slices in the sugar mixture, then roll them in the oats.
  4. Let cool.

Barn Cookies

  • 4 cups grain (like oats, steam-rolled)
  • 8 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup water

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in large mixing bowl.
  2. Stir with large spoon until mixture is the consistency of thick cookie dough.
  3. Drop tablespoons of dough on a greased cookie sheet, spacing cookies 1 inch apart.
  4. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour or until crisp.
  5. Remove from oven, and cool for 30 minutes.

Easy Horse Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup carrot grated
  • 1 apple grated
  • 2 Tablespoons corn oil
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup flour

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Lightly grease cookie sheet.
  3. In a large bowl, mix carrot, apple, corn oil and molasses together.
  4. Fold in salt, oats and flour until well mixed.
  5. Spread dough out in one big piece on the cookie sheet.
  6. Score dough with a knife to make it easier to break apart after baking. (Or, roll dough out and cut with cookie cutters)
  7. Bake for 20 minutes or until brown.
  8. Let cool.

Sticky Treats

Ingredients

  • apple or carrot
  • corn syrup
  • quick oats

Directions

Cut apple in half. Take core out. Roll in corn syrup then oats. Do the same for a carrot. Horses love this treat and it only takes 30 seconds.

Peppermint Treats

Ingredients

  • 10 crushed peppermints
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 apples
  • 1 cup of oats
  • 1/4 cup of molasses
  • water

Directions

  1. Mix flour and oats together
  2. Add molasses
  3. Add water slowly until mixture is doughy
  4. Add peppermint
  5. Add apples
  6. Cook at 350 degrees until golden brown

Banana-Glazed Apple

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 1 banana
  • 1 handful of ice cubes

Directions

  1. Peel and cut banana
  2. Place banana and ice cubes into a blender; chop and blend until creamy
  3. Cut apple top off and carve out the middle
  4. Fill the apple with the blended banana
  5. Pour rest of banana over the sides of the apple
  6. Serve

Donny's Delicious Munchies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry oats
  • 1 cup shredded carrots and apples
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup water

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Mix together dry ingredients
  3. Mix in remaining ingredients
  4. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown

Tasty Mix

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 1 handful uncooked oatmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons syrup, honey, or molasses
  • 1 handful corn
  • powdered sugar
  • 1 handful grain
  • 1 handful cheerios

Directions

  1. Cut up apple into slices
  2. Mix together the corn, oatmeal, apple slices, grain, cheerios, and salt
  3. Drizzle with syrup and sprinkle with powdered sugar
  4. Chill in refrigerator over night
